A lone figure, dressed in modest, off-white attire and a headscarf, traverses a sweeping expanse of golden fields. The soft brushstrokes give the landscape a warm, textured glow, as though the wind stirs gently through tall grain. Against this expansive backdrop, the young woman’s small form carries a sense of both resolve and fragility.

Her expression appears pensive, and her steps—barefoot or nearly so—underscore a quiet determination. The horizon line is darkened with distant trees or low hills, lending a subtle contrast to the luminous field. Above, a pale sky stretches out, reinforcing the painting’s airy openness. There is a feeling of calm perseverance in the way she moves forward, her gaze focused on something just beyond the picture’s edge.

Titled “Walking to School,” the piece evokes a narrative of daily commitment and endurance—perhaps a journey repeated many times, though rarely witnessed by outside eyes. The painting captures a fleeting moment in a countryside world, balancing nostalgia with the harsh realities of simple routines. It invites viewers to imagine her thoughts and the path ahead, quietly acknowledging the effort and hope woven into every careful step.

From the artist -

This painting was created after I contemplated the human will in lands far from my own. The woman is a depiction of determination. She is a force. She walks with confidence and with purpose, she is depicted alone. Her visage is fixed on a commitment to herself.

She is not walking without risk for there are others who may wish her harm, her step does not falter. We may contemplate why she desires knowledge and the future she aspires if our minds may thus wander; this depiction is meant to celebrate the will, agency and the pursuit of purpose self-found. I wonder myself sometimes if she even made it to school;  how it could only have been that that stops her. This kind of will is inspirational to me.

Often I see ordinary things and places and when these things and places are in a land far from my own they can become quite extraordinary. Such as a young girl walking to school.
